The Protocol

It just struck me that many whom ventured to Australia to study have actually returned home upon graduation to join our Malaysian workforce. Some have even planned to stay behind initially but have succumbed to their homesickness and came home. So what is actually the big 'hoo-haa' here when I relate to people that it was my choice in returning home?

'Huh? How come you don't want to find a job there?'
'Why don't wanna get PR there?'
'Why why why??'

Shocked parents, shocked friends, shocked parents' friends, shocked family members and I bet even shocked pets.

Is it really that big a deal that my choice is ultimately to come home and be with my family? What's the point of staying on and having this high paying job but lament about the weather, the food, the lack of the so-called mamak vibe and what not? After all, half the people I know complain about missing home but still choose to stay on due to society pressure. It almost seems like a rule that one must stay on after graduation.

It's so annoying that I get these questions almost everytime I state that I just graduated and am back home job hunting.

And who knows? With the recent change in Malaysia's political structure, it could all be heading for the better. As far as I know I am back happy and enjoying every aspect of my life - savouring all the good food, feeling the love and kicking back at what is ultimately home. Hey, I even get to lose weight in the process despite the lesser walking and more driving.
