My Country, My Life

Music begins. Lyrics in hand. Swaying intiates. That was a brief peek into the scenario on Friday night which was, you might not have guessed it, Merdeka Night! A further elaboration would mean a night for the Malaysians in Newcastle to celebrate our country's National Day.

Held at the Silver Dolphin Restaurant - a Malaysian restaurant apparently, a room was entirely booked for some 160 of us. If I said I was there for the patriotic person I am, NO ONE would believe me so I would just stick to commenting on the food. A wide and I mean W I D E selection of food was available. The best I have seen yet in Newcastle. Ah...not as if they have a lot to offer anyway. From apple crumble to sago pudding, wanton noodles to chicken laksa, fried calamari and honey chicken to some fucking awesome chicken nuggets I could not get enough of, you name it they HAD it! Being the bloody greedy pig, I was scurrying between our room and the buffet spread non-stop. I got my very much deprived portion of Dim Sum that evening since it was readily available MA! They even had those great machines serving 'soft serve' ice cream and which I didn't really want to eat but instead just wanted to press the lever and get the ice cream for the fun of it. So of course I had to eat the portion I pressed out. Heh.

The 2 main things I did that night were 1) Eat and 2) Camwhore. There was a point when all of us had to stand and sing the National Anthem 'Negaraku' and some National Songs. Again being the 'Singaporean' I am always called, it was pretty embarrassing having to hold the lyrics to my own country's National Anthem and singing it. But hey! I sang it with my heart OK! Same went for Jalur Gemilang.

In the bus on the way to makan!

Our table, which was nearest to the door = nearest to food. *cackles*

And to wrap up the photos, a shot of us Taylor's students...

And OH! Before I forget, Miss Emmerie Wong Phaik Yen, whom I might add is the last person to be patriotic (hahah), won MS PATRIOTIC for the night! We could not stop laughing. Here's a shot of her glamourous red-carpet moment:

It was amazing when all of us Malaysians together in Newcastle come as one and sing. Some huge sacks of nostalgia, patriotism and homesickness were hurled at me. I felt it. I did and I don't know about anyone else. But who cares. I love my country Malaysia to bits. No matter what anyone says. Cos there is nowhere else I would rather belong than my Malaysia itself. I am Malaysian and I'm lovin' it.

Selamat Hari Merdeka!
